JMU Access Partnership

Research - Future Projects

JMU Access Partnership is eager to work on research projects in the following areas:

Education and Training

JMU is a leading training provider on access and inclusive environments. We have recently completed research relating to continuous professional development and inclusive design, and would like to follow this with research on the integration of inclusive design principles in undergraduate and postgraduate professional education.

Building Design

JMU is keen to assist on any research projects into building design and use. Understanding and meeting the needs of disabled people by providing a safe, accessible and unrestricted environment improves standards for all members of society.

Transport

JMU has been involved in a number of national projects looking at the design of transport and the transport infrastructure as well as the possible inclusion of assistive technology within public transport, both within the UK and Europe. We would be keen to continue research in this specialist area.

Street Environments

JMU is keen to participate on research projects that aim to make the street environment an easier, more pleasant place to be. Unfortunately many people feel that travelling alone is not safe for them and this can lead to isolation and denied opportunities to participate fully in society.

Building Materials and Products

JMU is keen to assist with research into building materials and products and how the materials can be used to assist blind, partially sighted and deafblind people. Two particular areas of interest are:

The specification and production of new materials for tactile floor surfaces.

The use of glass and other surfaces which transmit or reflect light so that the visual effects created do not adversely effect the building users.
