Access Awareness: One Day Workshop

Aim

To outline the key factors relating to the provision of accessible buildings.

Audience

The course is appropriate for any professional whose work affects the design, furnishing and decoration of buildings and / or external environments

Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • develop an understanding of the relationship between design and disability
  • develop an appreciation of the access requirements of disabled people
  • recognise the access implications of the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)
  • identify good and bad practice in accessible design

Format

A one day workshop for a maximum of 16 participants. Highly participative, comprising presentations, question and answer sessions, discussions and practical case studies. Workshop notes and supplementary technical information will be issued.

CPD

A certificate of course completion will be issued for use in participants' Continuing Professional Development records.

Content

The workshop will include the following modules:

Design and Disability

  • the disabling environment based on the social model of disability
  • the access and design implications of a range of physical and sensory impairments.

The Legislative Framework

  • an outline of the access implications of the Disability Discrimination Act, Part M of the Building Regulations and current good practice standards.

Principles into Practice

  • applying access guidelines, key elements and dimensions
  • external environments and approach to the building; circulation within the building; facilities, including toilet provision; fixtures, fittings and finishes.

Action Planning

  • an opportunity for participants to consider how they will use the training in their own work.

Cost

Open course: £250 per person, plus VAT.

In-house course: £1200, plus VAT  for the day.

Alternative Arrangements

Number of participants: The course is designed for up to 16 participants to enable high levels of participation. A similar course can be run for larger numbers with consequently lower levels of participation.

Workshop duration: A half day programme can be provided, shortening all elements, the level of detail and participation. We can also offer one-hour lunchtime CPD seminars on a similar basis.
