Access Statements: One Day Workshop
Aim
To provide guidance in the preparation and assessment of access statements
Audience
Architects, access consultants, designers, planners, building control officers, facility managers and others with an interest in access
Objectives
This course will:
- Provide an outline of the key issues regarding access statements
- Enable participants to prepare and assess access statements
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Understand the relationship between design and disability
- Appreciate the benefits of inclusive design
- Recognise the access implications of the Disability Discrimination Act
- Apply the guidance on access statements at the 4 stages - strategic, planning, design and occupation
Format
A one day workshop for a maximum of 16 participants. Highly participative, comprising presentations, question and answer sessions, discussions and practical case studies. Workshop notes and supplementary technical information will be issued.
CPD
A certificate of course completion will be issued for use in participants' Continuing Professional Development records.
Content
The workshop will include the following modules:
Inclusive Design
- The benefits of Access Statements
The Legislative Framework
- An outline of the access implications of the Disability Discrimination Act and how this relates to access statements
- Planning Guidance
- Approved Document Part M of the Building Regulations
- BS 8300:2001
- Introduction to other Best Practice documents
- DRC Guidance on Access Statements
Principles into Practice - preparing access statements
- Roles and responsibilities
- Consultation
- Stage One: The strategic Access Statement
- Stage Two: The Access Statement at Planning
- Stage Three: The Access Statement Design Stage: Building Regulations
- Stage Four: The Occupancy Access Statement
- Deviation from good practice: dealing with difficult issues e.g. historic environments, existing contraints
Action Planning
- An opportunity for participants to consider how they will use the training in their own work

Cost
Open course: £250 per person, plus VAT.
In-house course: £1200, plus VAT for the day.
Alternative Arrangements
Number of participants. The course is designed for up to 16 participants to enable high levels of participation. A similar course can be run for larger numbers with consequently lower levels of participation.
Workshop duration. A half day programme can be provided, shortening all elements, the level of detail and participation.
