Signage and Wayfinding: One Day Workshop

Aim

Enable participants to apply signage and wayfinding principles to enhance the accessibility of buildings. Based on the 'Sign Design Guide'.

Audience

Architects, access consultants, designers, planners, builders, facilities managers, signage manufacturers, building control officers, facility managers and others professionals with an interest in accessible signage.

Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the relationship between signage and the Disability Discrimination Act
  • Provide the key characteristics of inclusive signage
  • Understand how people wayfind and the function of signage
  • Identify  what makes a signage scheme useful
  • How to appraise and audit signage schemes
  • Enable signage manufacturers and designers to develop inclusive signage strategies and policies for clients

Format

A one-day workshop for a maximum of 16 participants. Highly participative, comprising presentations, question and answer sessions, discussions and practical case studies. Workshop notes and supplementary technical information will be issued.

CPD

A certificate of course completion will be issued for use in participants' Continuing Professional Development records.

Content

The workshop will include the following modules:

Understanding Blindness

  • The requirements of the DDA
  • What it is like to be blind: a visual awareness exercise
  • How a blind person finds a sign
  • The importance of colour and tonal contrast.

One Sign for All

  • Show how signs incorporating the requirements of visually impaired users can be as attractive as other signs
  • How to create a one sign system catering for all users

Action Planning

  • An opportunity for participants to consider how they will use the training in their own work

Cost

Open course: £250 per person, plus VAT.

In-house course: £1200 plus VAT for the day.

Alternative Arrangements

Number of participants. The course is designed for up to 16 participants to enable high levels of participation. A similar course can be run for larger numbers with consequently lower levels of participation.
