JMU Access Partnership

Joint Committee on Mobility of Blind and Partially Sighted People. (JCMBPS)

Please note - links on this page open in a new browser window

The JCMBPS is an independent body consisting of representatives from the principle organisations of blind, deafblind and partially sighted people, with a specific interest in access and mobility. The Secretariat for JCMBPS is provided by Guide Dogs for the Blind.

Aims

The Joint Committee believes that visually impaired people should be able to move around and use buildings, streets and transport facilities safely and independently. At the present time, this is not the case, as visually impaired people experience enormous barriers to freedom of movement, seriously limiting their opportunities and choices.

The objectives of the JCMBPS are:

  • To consider how best to improve the built environment, allowing visually impaired people to move around independently, safely and without restriction, as pedestrians, public transport users and public building occupants.
  • To enlist the support of Central Government, Local Authorities, transport operators and other relevant organisations to achieve this aim.
  • To encourage related research that would benefit visually impaired people.
  • To support mobility training of visually impaired people.
  • To undertake any other relevant activities which will help the above aims.

JMU Access Partnership supports these aims, contributing and consulting on policy statements and research, whenever possible.

Policy Statements

Policy statements have been produced on a range of issues to give guidance to all providers, designers, operators and managers of transport facilities, buildings and the pedestrian environment
