Helping you make Transport accessible

EC Regulation No 1107/2006 concerning the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air is now a reality, with articles 3 and 4 already in force since July 2007 and the rest following in July 2008.

RNIB offers a range of consultancy services to help you meet the regulations, as well as increasing your customer base.

Access Audits

For existing airports and aircraft we can will assess your level of access for disabled people and recommend solutions for improvement. Providing a more accessible environment will helps disabled passengers to get around and to use the airport and aircraft. We can also help you to identify suitable points in the airport from which disabled passengers can announce their arrival and request assistance.

Access Appraisals

For new or proposed refurbishments of airports and aircraft we can assess your proposed design, offer solutions and advise your design team. This will contribute to providing an accessible environment for all of your passengers.

Training

The Regulation focuses on provision of assistance to disabled passengers and the suitable appropriate training of staff providing such assistance. We can provide Disability Awareness training for your management and frontline staff as well as and a specialist half-day sessions on subjects such as signage or colour contrast for design staff. See the full course list.

Signage

The Regulation requires suitable signage at any designated meeting or assistance points for disabled passengers. Your signage can be reviewed as part of our an access audits or appraisals. We also provide specific signage consultancy, including design assessments, detailed reports, costings and samples of proposed designs.

RNIB React

React units give an audio message relating to the location and amenities. A fob carried by the disabled person with a disability triggers your message. It can increase your customers confidence and independence when using an external environment.

Information and Communication

The Regulation requires communication of safety rules and airport information to disabled passengers in accessible formats. Our consultants assess print, websites, maps and audible systems (including Real Time Information) from the perspective of a customer with disabilities. Feedback and further training can be vital in ensuring your customers get the information they need to use your service with ease.

We can also support you by producing your accessible maps, large print, Braille or audio formats.

Websites

Many people use websites to check their travel options. This is a clear business reason for making your website accessible - not to mention a legal requirement. RNIB can help you make your website accessible through assessment and training. If we consider the website to be accessible it may be awarded the ‘RNIB See It Right’ logo to display on the site.
